Medical billing is a process of submitting claims to insurance companies in order to receive payment for services provided by a healthcare provider. (Doctor).

Here is the scenario when the patient who does not have health insurance visits the doctor:

Patient visits doctor and pays for service in cash.

Now, suppose the patient decides to obtain Health Insurance.  He can purchase insurance from the insurance company.  Or suppose his employer provides insurance for their employees.

With insurance coverage, the scenario now changes.   When the patient visits the doctor, instead of paying in cash, he/she presents his insurance card.  The doctor is now responsible for collecting the payment for his service from the insurance company.

For this the doctor will need to prepare a claim with a list of services and drugs provided to the patient and the details of the patient’s insurance.  The doctor will then send the bill to the insurance company who will subsequently send the payment.
